How to Reset Car "Check Engine" Light

If the check engine (malfunction indicator) light comes on steady or blinks while the engine is running, it may indicate a potential emission control problems – emission control system malfunction or engine misfire on your car.


The check engine light is on because the engine control module (ECM) senses a problem with the system.

First, need to find out and fix the problems. For example, running the vehicle out of fuel, which may causes the engine to misfire or the spark plugs need to be replaced.

Some local auto parts store can help you read the codes with the information to determine what needs to be done to fix the problems.

After you've properly diagnosed and fixed the problem that triggered the OBD trouble code, you can reset or clear the Check Engine / Service Engine Soon light by either disconnecting the battery or using a scan tool.

➊ Disconnecting the battery -  It is the cheap, easy, free method.  Simply disconnect your battery, turn on the headlight switch for about five to ten minutes, and re-connect the battery. Or disconnect the positive terminal of the battery only, wait 10-15 minutes, re-connect and the check engine light should be off (The car computer system has some time delayed reset). This is pretty simple, but will likely result in you losing your radio and clock presets and perhaps some other small things like that.

➋ Using a scan tool - Most scan tools have an option to clear or reset codes without the use of any tools or touching the battery. Consult the scan tool's manual for information on how to do it with your particular car model.

Remove Roof Moss

In the Pacific Northwest, many homes have moss growing on the roof. The house not only looks like been neglected, but also the moss will damage and shorten the life of your roof shingles.

Here is the simple and efficient way to DIY remove moss and save your roof. The processes include kill it, remove it, and prevent it. However, the most important thing is “Safety First” when you do this roof moss task.


➊ Wait for the moss is in the reasonably dry and thirsty condition, such as weeks after the last rain.

➋   Dilute plain laundry bleach with water, one part bleach and three parts water. Spray the mixture on the affected areas of roof with a pump garden sprayer. Wet it all; any you miss will not be killed.


➌   Sweep / brush away the dead moss after it turn brown in a few days. It needs to be very careful if you want use water to flush off the roof. The pressure water has to be pointed down the roof to avoid damaging the shingles.


➍ Install zinc strips at the peak and at down-roof intervals to inhibit future moss growth. The strips release zinc carbonate into rain water washing over the roof.


➎   Moss grows in damp shaded areas. Remove leaves and debris from the roof and the gutters regularly. Next, cut back tree branches that are shading your roof to prevent moss growing.
